We will be creating our initials in the Mayan Hieroglyphic using the link above.
Magnificent Mosaics
MAYA FACT: The ancient Maya made exquisite masks from stone, wood, gold, obsidian, and shell. These masks often contained many pieces of jade arranged in mosaic patterns. Maya royalty also had personal items beautifully decorated in these patterns.
ACTIVITY: Students can make their own intricate mosaic picture of their initials in the style of the ancient Maya.
The steps we will take in creating these mosaic designs:
1. You will access the above website to create and print their initials.
2. You will draw the initials on a 12x7 piece of white poster board.
3. Next you will cut out tissue paper “tiles,” each no larger than an 1/2 inch square.
4. You will glue the tiles one at a time next to each other on the initials,
5. You will share your masterpieces with one another at the end of the lesson!
