Victorian Architecture - Gingerbread Houses
Gingerbread Houses at Oak Bluff on Martha's Vineyard
Objectives:
Students will view and discuss why the houses of the
Victorian period were called Gingerbread Houses. While
learning about this style of Architecture, students
discovered the three characteristics of a Gingerbread House;
1. Front porches
2. Painted using 3 or 4 colors
3. Decorations for trimmings and shingles
4. Symmetry
Students will create and illustrate a Gingerbread House
using pencils, markers and watercolor paint showing the
four characteristics found in this particular architectural
style.
